PROGRESS
Task 1
Week 1

Mr. Kamal introduced the content and tasks of this module to us.

From Mr. Kamal's lecture

Week 2
This week I presented my idea to Sir. I wanted to combine the Chinese oriental carp with lipstick products to create a lipstick brand with an oriental aesthetic. I write my ideas and references in Miro.

Ideas and References in Miro

Mr. Kamal provided some feedback on my brand and I wrote down the suggestions and questions.

I wrote down the feedback.

Question raised by Mr. Kamal:
  1. What is Qi Liyu's brand slogan? Does it capture the spirit of the brand?
  2. What feelings do users experience when using the product?
  3. What specific user experience does this product provide?
  4. Why did you choose "koi fish" as the brand theme?
  5. What are the brand's image, identity, and brand associations?
  6. What are Qi Liyu's product specifications (size, material, form, etc.)?
  7. What are the existing brands in the lip gloss market? Please list and analyze them.
  8. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each brand?
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your brand?
  10. What makes your lip gloss unique?
  11. Do you think Qi Liyu is only suitable for the Chinese market, or can it be marketed globally?
  12. Do you think the brand has global appeal?
  13. Why does the koi fish (or good luck) motif help the brand's development?
  14. If you target men but use different animal motifs, will you lose your female customers?
  15. How should you consider price positioning when selling to young women aged 18-25?
  16. What is the average price of lipstick in Malaysia? What's the acceptable price for students?
  17. Are there any local or regional brands similar to yours in the market? Are there any references?
  18. Is this brand designed for active/outdoor users?
  19. How do you plan to integrate "elegance" with the product's usage scenarios?
  20. In what scenarios do users experience a sense of "good luck" or "elegance" when using the product?
  21. How do you position your brand? (Market Positioning / Consumer Psychology / Price Positioning)
  22. What makes your brand unique? Please provide research-based reasons.
  23. Why is the "carp" brand inspiration important to you? Is it also important to users?
  24. If someone doesn't like the color pink, will they be excluded from this brand?
  25. How can you prove that the "good luck" element truly appeals to consumers? (Particularly in the Chinese market)
  26. If users wear Qi Liyu to important events or interviews, will it bring them confidence and good luck? How can you make them feel this way?
  27. If I were a consumer, what would I associate with this product? Does it immediately evoke Chinese culture, good fortune, and elegance?
  28. How can you clearly integrate the cultural significance of the carp into your brand?
  29. Can you draw inspiration from the use of animal symbolism by brands in other industries (such as Jaguar and Proton) to strengthen your brand's recognition?
  30. Can you formulate a clear problem statement that connects your brand values, unique proposition, and solution?
I summarized these contents from feedback, and conducted some research:

  • Qi Liyu's brand tagline is: Elegant, Refined, and Bringing Good Luck.
  • Users should have a clear feeling when using the product—what do you want them to feel?
  • Carp Koi fish represent a symbol of luck in Chinese culture. Why choose koi as the brand theme?
  • The brand's tagline incorporates three key elements: brand image, brand associations, and unique brand identity—for example, "non-sticky," "long-lasting makeup," and "auspicious."
  • The target audience is primarily women aged 18-25, college students or recent graduates, belonging to the Millennial and Gen Z generations.
  • The product's portability and lightweight design should be suitable for outdoor and flexible use scenarios, such as university life, beauty bloggers, and outdoor activities.
  • The lip gloss should not be priced as high as high-end brands (Dior, YSL, Chanel, MAC), as this would discourage students.
  • Affordable brands such as Flower Knows, 3CE, and Can make are priced around RM55-60, so Qi Liyu's pricing should remain affordable.

There are already numerous lipstick brands in the market, so I need to:

  • Analyze the unique selling points, strengths, and weaknesses of competing brands
  • Determine how Qi Liyu stands out in terms of visuals, functionality, and cultural values.
  • Does the brand's "elegance" align with the target user's lifestyle?
  • While pink packaging is elegant and lovely, it also narrows the market, as not everyone likes pink. Red might be a more appropriate color.
  • I recommend focusing on Chinese consumers, as the Chinese market is large and culturally relatable, and they are highly sensitive to concepts like "good luck," "animal symbolism," and "color symbolism."
  • I recommend referencing animal-themed brands in other industries (such as Jaguar and Proton) as supporting research.
  • Clarify a solid problem statement before developing a USP (unique selling point) and solution.
  • Questions I need to consider include: What are the product's advantages? What is its positioning? How can I connect with users through emotional and cultural elements?

Week 3
I did some research based on the suggestions and questions sir asked and wrote it all in Miro.

This week we had a presentation.

Task 2
Week 5
This week I looked for some references for the colors and fonts of Qi Liyu’s logo. I decided on a red primary color and Elephant font.

Week 6
This is the first draft of the logo. Sir suggested that I use orange-red as the main color, and told me that Task 2 mainly needs to complete the packaging design and concept design, and the logo can be completed later in Task 3.

Logo first draft

Week 7
In Task 2, I mainly need to complete Qi Liyu's packaging design and Concept. Sir told me that I need to create a Packaging expansion diagram and an exhibition design.

FEEDBACK
Week 1: A Brief of MIB and introduction to Task1

Week 2: Mr. Kamal suggested that I conduct a deeper research on everything from Qi Liyu’s brand slogan, target audience, and product uniqueness, to cultural symbolism and market positioning—user experience, competitive analysis, and how to clearly define and communicate the brand’s identity and emotional value.

Week 3: I conducted in-depth research based on Sir's questions and organized my analysis and reflections on a Miro board. By systematically responding to each feedback question, I further clarified the brand's target audience, cultural purpose, pricing strategy, and core competitiveness.

Week 4: Task 1 Brand idea presentation

Week 5: This week I started looking for the right brand colors and fonts for Qi Liyu.

Week 6: Sir also reminded me that Task 2 should focus on packaging and concept design, and the logo design can be postponed.

Week 7: I progressed further with the packaging and concept design, and Sir suggested I start drawing the packaging unfold and thinking about how the exhibition display would be designed.

Week 8: /

Week 9: Continue to follow up on the design of the Exhibition. Sir taught me how to adjust the color of the packaging design. I learned how to use the same color in Ai to adjust the brightness of the color to get the color of the shadow and bright sides of the packaging box.

Week 10: Sir suggested that I add information on the packaging.

Week 11: I need to design an expanded view of a packaging box.

Week 12: The first version of the logo didn’t look like a fish and needed to be optimized.

Week 13: I redesigned the logo, and Sir selected a good sketch and personally outlined optimization directions, helping me understand how to enhance the symbolism and recognizability of the graphic. I refined the logo based on Mr. Kamal suggestions and received positive feedback. He felt that the new logo better captured the "koi" element, possessing cultural recognition and brand uniqueness.

Week 14: Completed all brand mockups, brand guidelines and final report PPT.

REFLECTION

Through the Major 1, I gained a deeper understanding of how to build a complete brand identity, from concept to execution. Through Mr. Kamal's questions and feedback, I learned how to explore my concepts and delve into psychological analysis, market positioning, brand storytelling, and cultural symbolism.

In Tasks 2 and 3, I made progress, from selecting colors and fonts to developing packaging design, exhibition mockups, and logo iterations. Mr. Kamal's patient guidance helped me refine my design concepts and technical skills, particularly in areas such as color correction, expanding packaging layout, and translating symbolism into logo design. Mr. Kamal always documented his feedback and refinements on paper, helping me to clearly grasp the essence of his work. With his guidance, I was able to make precise progress in each session. Finally, I completed a complete brand presentation for Qi Liyu, including final mockups, a refined logo, and brand guidelines. Most importantly, I learned how to integrate cultural significance into modern brand design to create a compelling brand experience.
