INSTRUCTIONS

In Task 3 Design post in the blog, include:

After the visual analysis, you will now create a work of design, based by the idea you have proposed in Task .

You are expected to apply your knowledge of design principles in your idea development and final design.

You may use any medium and/or materials, except for full photography, that are suitable to convey your final visual message.

Sketches

I chose the first sketch to further create. In the final creation, we wanted to retain the basic elements and characteristics of the artwork "Ivan Aivazovsky: Ship on Stormy Seas", and add the design principles of "emphasis" “ Contrast“ and "balance".

Development

First development design attempts

Initially, I drew the development design with Procreate, but it didn't as well as I expected. And it's not close to my reference. So I made a change, and I used a procrate straw to absorb the main colors of the work "Ivan Aivazovsky: Ship on Stormy Seas" so that I could reproduce it as much as possible. And because I want to incorporate the design principle of "balance", I use the "Symmetry Drawing Guide" tool in Procreate to ensure that my drawings are symmetrical to achieve the principle of balance.

Symmetry Drawing Guide

I first use a straw to absorb the colors of the reference work and set the base color block of the whole picture. And the sea water is paved with color, and then the white waves are outlined.

Then I drew the main body of the ship.

Because the waves outlined with a white brush were too stiff, I used the smudge tool again to retouch the edges of the sea and waves.

Then I added lightning to accentuate the intensity of the storm and balance it with two lightning bolts.

Finally I added the elements of seagulls and rainstorms.

Final Outcome

Rationale:
When I designed this development work, I applied the design principles of "emphasis", "balance" and "contrast". First of all, the black ship becomes the visual center in the ocean, foreshadowing the ship going through a storm, guiding the viewer's gaze to focus on the ship's predicament, I used a red distress light to decorate the top of the ship's mast, and the symmetrical lightning on the left and right guides the gaze back to the ship, making it the focal point of the picture. Thus reinforcing the themes of "helplessness" and "unpredictable fate". Secondly, the ship is facing the center of the picture, and the lightning and waves on the left and right are symmetrically distributed, which strengthens the sense of stability of the whole picture, indicating that the ship is still standing despite the storm. In the end, I contrasted the dark ship with the blue waves around me and the light of the sky in the distance, and also used the contrast between the red points of light and the cold and warm of the cool-toned ocean. The waves in the storm and the fury of lightning contrast with the stationary ships. It indicates people's sense of fate that they are helpless in the face of natural disasters but calm and calm in the face of difficulties.

FEEDBACK

Use the same strategy as leeway. Get a picture right, put it on a layer, lock it and then trace on top of it. You will get like really good looking boat and then get a picture of waves and then trace it also OK.
And recreate this using other strategies. Public domain stock photos and cut it digitally cut, cut and then paste it. Call larger, make a picture out of it and then do heavy Photoshop processing on top of it.

This doesn't look like the final design, your reference is good, and a lot of changes have to be made to get closer to your reference.

REFLECTION

 Experience

Throughout this final assignment, I used the three design principles of “balance,” “contrast,” and “emphasis” to develop this “Ivan Aivazovsky: Ship on Stormy Seas”

artwork. From initial brainstorming to final execution, I explored various techniques and experimented with different elements to effectively communicate the message I wanted to convey. This project allowed me to apply the design principles I learned throughout the semester, such as emphasis, balance, and contrast, in a meaningful and practical way. One of the biggest challenges I faced was refining my artwork to achieve a visually striking yet well-structured design. However, through multiple iterations and feedback sessions, I was able to improve and strengthen my artwork.

Observation

Throughout this development phase, and by observing my own workflow, I also realized that my creative process is highly iterative and requires constant refinement and critical evaluation to achieve the best results.

Finding

This project reinforced my understanding of the importance of design principles. This final assignment was a valuable learning experience.

FURTHER READING

《Universal Principles of Design》

The author conveys through this book that design is not just about visual beauty, but about following certain principles to make it more practical and in line with the public's cognitive habits. And through a large number of case studies and theoretical support, the author makes us realize that a successful design needs to take into account multiple aspects such as vision, interaction, psychology, etc., rather than relying solely on personal "aesthetic preferences". For example, the "Exposure Effect" mentioned in the book shows that people tend to like familiar things. Therefore, when designing products, maintaining the familiarity and consistency of the interface can effectively improve user acceptance.

After reading this book, one of my biggest gains is a deeper and more systematic understanding of design principles, and learning how to actually apply these design principles.

In general, "Universal Principles of Design" is a book worth repeated scrutiny and practice. It not only provides rich theoretical knowledge, but also many intuitive practical cases.
