Packaging and Merchandising Design: Final Project

INTRODUCTIONS

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This is a collaboration project between the Design School and School of Biosciences. Students from SBS has developed food in their previous semester and in need of packaging design for their product.

In this project, students will be required to create a new packaging design based on a collaboration project. The project aims to develop students' skills in creating and designing suitable packaging that reflects the product and its target audiences.

Objective

The objective of this project is to encourage students to use their critical thinking skills and design skills to create packaging that effectively communicate the brand message and are aesthetically pleasing.

Tasks

Research and analysis: Students must conduct research and analyze the product and its target market. This will help them understand the target audience, and the product USP.

Concept development

Students must develop packaging design concepts that reflect the brand and the product. These concepts should be original and aligned with the brand's message and target audience.

The Brand-Sip & Shine

Sip & Shine redefines the yogurt drink experience by combining the benefits of traditional gut health support with an innovative twist—collagen for radiant skin. Unlike ordinary yogurt drinks that focus solely on promoting digestion and gut health, Sip & Shine offers a dual advantage: enhancing skin health while nurturing your digestive system. Infused with collagen, our product helps you glow from the inside out, delivering beauty and wellness in every sip. It's the perfect choice for those who seek a balanced lifestyle, combining gut-friendly benefits with a boost to your skin's natural beauty. With Sip & Shine, a sip a day keeps your skin shining and your gut happy.

REFERENCE

reference

After discussing the mango and coconut flavored lactose-free probiotic yogurt with the culinary academy team in the food lab, we divided the design phase into three styles: pastoral style, tropical island style and cute style. Each member of the team completed a design style. Then we showed the design draft to the culinary academy team members, and we needed to do a combined design.

Then we made several more revisions based on Miss Vitiyaa’s suggestions and these were the draft progress of our design process.

Giving a sense of watery, relaxation and hydration. We also uses blue as our primary colour to express the feeling of minimalistic and clean, and emphasizing the marine collagen.

Colour Palette

The final design incorporates geometric polygonal vector elements, highlighting the beauty of simplicity and elegance. The refreshing blue color combined with the splashing water design not only conveys freshness and vitality, but also echoes the product positioning of beauty and skin care.

Final Design JPEG

Our group printed out the final design, cut it out with a utility knife and ruler, and pieced together the yogurt packaging.

FEEDBACK
week 6
This week we got in touch with the Culinary Academy team and discussed the design needs with them. More information was obtained.
week 7
We need to make sure to the cooking team that we are using real fruit images or vector fruit images for our designs.
Week 8
We didn't have a physical class this week, we shared our sketches with the Culinary Academy members and we needed to do the combined design.
Week 9
Our group showed Miss the yogurt packaging picture. We still needed to revise the design and consult the Culinary Academy about their favorite packaging style. They liked to highlight one or two fruits and use bright colors.
Week 10
This week we presented three different designs to Miss, using vector images of coconuts and mangoes. We finally decided on the front design of the yogurt packaging, and now we need to prepare a presentation slide and finalize the overall design of the yogurt packaging.
Week 11
In class, we made a model of the printed packaging design
Week 12
Confirmed to make 6 products 1. Store booth
2. Tote bag
3. Billboard
4. Tumbler
5. Business card
6. Apron
Week 13
Business card should be related to the brand
Week 14
Submit the blog and complete the presentation

REFLACTION

Experience

Cooperating with SBS College to design the packaging of collagen yogurt drinks was a challenging and rewarding journey. Throughout the project, I participated in every link from concept sketches to final design. Since the project needs to meet the aesthetics of young consumers and convey the brand value of health and beauty, it must take into account both creativity and functionality. This is not only a breakthrough in design technology, but also a comprehensive cultivation of teamwork ability and presentation ability. In the design process, I learned how to combine creativity with functionality, and also deeply realized the importance of communication and feedback in teamwork. The completion of each task is both a challenge and growth.

Observation

During the design process, I observed several key points: Young consumers have high expectations for fashion and practicality, and they prefer simple, refreshing and visually impactful designs. At the same time, I also noticed that many successful packaging designs have one thing in common: they find a perfect balance between visual appeal and functional practicality.

Finding

With everyone's constant modifications and Miss's suggestions, the design plan has been gradually improved. The adjustments have not only made the work more ideal, but also allowed me to accumulate valuable experience in practice. By personally participating in the entire process of packaging design and product design, I not only deepened my understanding of design concepts and processes, but also learned how to balance creativity and practicality in practical applications. This experience has enabled me to gain a lot of valuable knowledge, especially in detail polishing, teamwork and efficient execution.

Packaging essentials : 100 design principles for creating packages

The book mentions that packaging is the most intuitive carrier for consumers to perceive brands, so the core value of a brand must be clearly conveyed through packaging design. For example, the author analyzed the packaging design of an international skin care brand, from font selection, color scheme to material application, all centered around the brand positioning of "combining nature and technology". In terms of detail processing, the product's color tone uses soft green and white, with minimalist fonts, which strengthens the concept of environmental protection and purity. This made me realize that design is not only the beautification of appearance, but also the visual expression of the brand's core.
