INSTRUCTIONS
TASK 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication
"In this task you will be asked to express typographically the fee content
provided in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm per page). Choose 1
from the 3 text options provided. No images are alopecoid. However, some
very minor graphical elements, i.e., line, shade, etc. might be allowed."
Research
First, I collected some information about typography and templates on the
Internet.
Task 2: Exercise
We need to create an editorial spread of two pages (200 x (para.
200)), using the text provided by Mr. Vinod.
Does not contain any images or colors except for minor graphic
elements such as lines, shadows, etc.
We plan to use Adobe InDesign for text layout, composition, and
expression, and Adobe Illustrator for title creation for expression.
1. Sketches
The Bauhaus influence can be seen in all areas of modern culture.
In architecture, the Bauhaus concept promoted the development of
functionalist architecture, focusing on the use of modern materials and
processes, the pursuit of clean lines and non-redundant design.
Many modern architects have been inspired by the Bauhaus, and they have
created many iconic buildings that have shaped the face of modern
cities.
Therefore, I want to use the word Bauhaus to highlight the feeling of
architecture and echo the theme.
2. Layout Process
I designed the word "Bauhaus" with the appearance of tall buildings,
aiming to convey the modern style of rows of tall buildings through
images, so as to echo the architectural style of Bauhaus.
In this design, the letters U, H and A form the main building
structure, and they are arranged vertically to form the main body of
the building.
I designed H as A building, and then connected U, A and H to form a
row of tall buildings.
In the exterior design of the building, simple geometric shapes and
clear lines are used, consistent with the principles of the Bauhaus
architectural style.
The whole design presents a simple atmosphere, representing the
modernist concept advocated by Bauhaus architecture.
The image of this tall building symbolizes the influence of the
Bauhaus school and its contribution to architecture, while also
conveying the values of innovation, progress and modernity.
The simplicity, geometry and functionality of Bauhaus design style have always attracted me, so I decided to apply this style in my design project.
I adjusted the baseline offset of the text so that they are all close
to the bottom baseline, which looks much neater and more
enjoyable.

FEEDBACK
Week 6:
General Feedback: In the sixth week, we learned the
InDesign layout, and the teacher commented on everyone's
work.
Week7: In the seventh week, the professor asked us to
bring a pen and paper and start a new task.
REFLECTIONS
Experiences:
Experiences:
By learning the basics of InDesign, such as how to create text
boxes, adjust font and paragraph styles, set spacing and
alignment, you can better master typography skills. Knowing how to create text boxes, import text,
style paragraphs, and apply fonts and sizes is the foundation of
mastering typography.
Secondly, mastering text flow and column segmentation skills is
especially important for complex typesetting projects.
Learn to use features such as automatic line wrapping,
automatic resize of text boxes, and column setting, you can
improve the efficiency and quality of typesetting.
In addition, understanding and flexible use of character and
paragraph styles can ensure the consistency and overall beauty
of the text.
Observation:
Detail and consistency in typography.
Note subtle differences in paragraph indentation,
punctuation use, text alignment, and line spacing. White space on a page is just as important
to the balance of the overall typography as it is to the
visuals.
Proper use of white space can make the text more comfortable
and easier to read.
Findings:
By adjusting the font size, line spacing, kerning and paragraph
spacing, you can make the text clearer and easier to read, and
increase the appeal of the layout.
FURTHER READING
Fig.4.1 Futher reading(20/05/2023)
The book describes in detail the elements of the font, the principles of typography and the relationship with the communication of information.
By studying the examples and practical guidance provided in the book, I was able to better use fonts to convey my design intentions.
This book is not only a theoretical work, it also contains a lot of practical cases and tips, which gave me a deeper understanding of the application and creativity of font design.
I particularly like the part of the book that explores the relationship between font form and communication.
By delving into factors such as font shape, line, spacing, and so on, I learned how to choose the right font for a particular scene and purpose.
The examples and discussions provided in the book helped me understand the importance of font design in conveying information.
Through the clever choice and use of fonts, we can express a specific emotion, brand image or level of information in the design.
In addition to this book, I also found some extended reading related to font design and typography.
One of The books I recommend is "The Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst.
This book is a classic typeface design guide that delves into the history, form, and application of typefaces.
It provides a wealth of examples and guidance to help readers better understand the art and techniques of typeface design.
Also, if you're interested in the history and evolution of typeface design, I recommend reading A Type Primer by John Kane.
It covers the origin, evolution, and different types of typefaces, which is very helpful for understanding the history of typeface design and the stories behind it.
Typographic Design: Form and Communication I particularly like page 76.
On this page, the book presents some excellent examples that illustrate the importance of font proportion and alignment.
By comparing different typography styles and layout options, I learned how to create typography designs that are balanced and visually appealing.
